Esme’s yoga classes make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. Throughout her years teaching, Esme has learned to read what each body needs and adapts her lessons to the individuals in her class so that everyone is catered for. She creates a space where people feel they can be themselves, be challenged and see the progression in their practice. All classes are complete practices that incorporate a sankalpa (intention sitting), sun salutation, standing poses to help your hips, sitting poses to help your spine, inversions to balance the nervous system and savasana (relaxation) for integration.
So, from beginner classes to advanced classes, Vinyasa to Yin, group sessions to individual sessions, in your office or in the comfort of your own home… Here’s what Esme offers in and around Edinburgh:
This is a great class to start your yoga journey! Perfect for people working at a desk all day as well as those completely new to yoga.
Vinyasa is a fun, invigorating practice where all poses are flowing and coordinated by ujjay breath. Classes are accessible to anyone as different options are given.
“I love Esme’s Wednesday evening beginners’ class! She is a brilliant and really encouraging teacher. I love the way she demonstrates poses and also checks students’ poses and provides both group and individual feedback. Most of all I love her enthusiasm – it is infectious and makes me want to learn more! Thank you, Esme.” – Melanie Scott
Vinyasa yoga, sometimes referred to as ‘flow yoga’, dates back to the Vedic age – the earliest period of yoga. In Sanskrit, the word is defined as ‘one breath, tied to one movement’ and consequently the practice connects one asana (posture) to the next using the breathing technique, Ujjayi. Not only does Vinyasa pushes you to your limits, it builds strength and flexibility while improving your cardiovascular capacity.
The fun, invigorating practice is perfect for those who have been practicing yoga for a while and want to take their practice to the next level. These classes are a complete practice, incorporating intention setting, pranayama, some advance poses like arm balances and inversions. They always end with a well deserve relaxation.
“Esme is a great teacher – incredibly motivating and committed to help everyone in class across different abilities get the most out of their practice. Before joining her, I would try the occasional taster here and there without getting “into it”. Now I am looking forward to her practice all week and am noticing how my strength, balance and confidence have grown over only few months. Thank you Esme!” – Mhairi MacDonald
Yin yoga, based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, is a practice of self-love. Asanas (postures) are held for longer periods of time, forcing you to slow down and be still and present. No matter your age, it helps revitalise your body tissue and leaves you feeling as if you’ve just had a massage. It helps your blood circulate; improves flexibility and joint mobility; and, like meditation, puts you face-to-face with your thoughts, teaching you to deal with them one breath at a time, thus reducing stress and anxiety.
Esme’s yin yoga masterclasses are suitable for all levels and abilities and are the perfect complement to other exercises that focus on muscular tissues. Classes last two hours, including a five-minute guided meditation session and fifteen minutes of yoga nidra (guided relaxation). Unlike other forms of yoga, you’re not generating internal heat during yin yoga so please wear layers to keep warm.
“Yin Yoga is hard to describe, but it really works. In our ‘go-faster, do-more, be-busy’ lifestyles it’s great to find something that recommends slowing down to help you keep fit. Especially when I’m feeling tired, I know it’ll be worth going to the class because I’ll emerge feeling calm, centred and balanced in my body again.” – Sonya
Esme’s one-to-one sessions are personalised for the individual. They’re devised around your abilities, your goals, your schedule and the needs of your body. Perhaps you want to join a yoga class but feel the need for some guidance and instruction first. Maybe you want to increase your flexibility or health. Even if you want to simply destress before or after work, paying attention to the needs of your body, mind and soul, these sessions are for you.
You can even do it in the comfort of your home! Esme will come to you with all the equipment you’ll require for the session. All you need to do is make time to invest in yourself. Your one-to-one session can also include Reiki, Yoga Tune Up balls, Bach Flower Remedies and meditation techniques.
“I chose 121 as Esme could give me yoga to suit my individual needs and also to arrange a time to suit me. It was a fantastic experience. Esme immediately put me at ease and was able to judge my ability and very soon boosted my confidence enough to join a class setting. I also benefited greatly from some Reiki and Bach flower remedies. What can I say, Esme is a passionate, highly skilled teacher and my 121 sessions were brilliant. Thank you, Esme, you are a very special lady!” – Lorna Pascall
The word ‘Yoga’ in Sanskrit is used to signify any form of connection. The connection of body and soul, of mind and spirit and, in Esme’s two-to-one sessions, the connection between two people. What better pastime with a friend or partner than a session that builds trust, promotes healing and centres you while keeping your social life alive! Two-to-one sessions help build trust, improve communication and teach you to help each other with poses all while keeping a relaxed, laughter-filled environment.
Like her one-to-one sessions, Esme’s two-to-one sessions are tailored to the needs of the pair, so they can learn and develop a yoga practice in a safe manner. Sessions are open to all, regardless of their ability level, and are done in the comfort of their own home.
“My husband has had problems with his back and neck over the last 15 years. He’s physically very strong but had no flexibility and constant mild pain in his neck. After going to Esme’s class in Cramond I asked her to come to our house to do lessons for the two of us. Within a couple of weeks my husband had more flexibility than I had EVER seen him have. After having had classes with the beautiful Esme for a couple of years Craig’s is totally transformed and has little or no pain in his neck. I have also had reiki with Esme and couldn’t recommend it enough. She is our ‘go to girl’ whenever physically, spiritually or mentally we need a boost. A very special person that now has seen various members of our friends and family to help them out too. Thank you Esme!” – Jane Walker
Sore lower backs, stiff necks, tight shoulders, increased stress, and dissipating energy and motivation. None are uncommon in offices. The fastest, most efficient way of tackling this is Yoga. Not only does it improve immune systems and overall health which results in decreased absenteeism; but it also increases productivity, work performance, concentration and creativity, while reducing muscle tension, headaches and physical tension.
Esme holds two types of Office Yoga classes. One, a one-off chair yoga session that teaches individuals how to discretely use yoga at your desk to help loosen muscle tension in their neck, shoulders, back, hips and legs throughout the day. And two, a weekly yoga sessions in an office space provided by you, designed to rejuvenate, relax and calm the team before, after or during work.
Both include breathing techniques and relaxation to calm the mind and regain balance in moments of stress.
“I heard about the plans to bring yoga to my office and was keen to support and attend as I had been struggling with back pain the past few years (Desk-based work definitely takes its toll!). After my first class I was hooked – in fact I was on a high! I go as much as I can and I can tell the difference even though I only go once a week (ok let’s be honest often it is less than that – unfortunately!). Yoga has improved my back and my general level of both physical and mental wellbeing. Yoga has been fantastic in its own right, but the added benefit is Esme herself – her positive outlook and intoxicating energy fills me enthusiasm for the rest of my day (and week) and after the session I always look forward to the next class. I highly recommend you give it a go!” – Susanne Cameron-Nielsen
Tension. Stress. Anxiety. Insecurities.
It doesn’t matter your age, race or gender; these things are indiscriminative. We all suffer from them at one point or another in our lives. For some, they take root in our minds, for others they become physical – showing themselves through tension, headaches and stiff muscles – and for the majority it’s a mix of the two. Now, Esme is available to teach you how to combat them no matter where they begin.
No two sessions are the same. Esme will create the perfect combination of techniques to suit the needs of those who attend, helping them reduce whatever negative motion they’re going through while increasing concentration, productivity, creativity, work performance and confidence.
Roll to Release is a new two hour masterclass that helps guide you through a combination of poses, breathing techniques and specialised movements using yoga therapy balls. It’s aim is to eradicate pain, improve posture and release specific areas of the body. This is done through releasing the myofascial of the body.
This class also incorporates accessible anatomy as a way to help solidify your mind-body connection (proprioception). Prolonged holds in tight areas of the body even provides self-massage trigger point therapy, easing tension. Therapy balls are supplied and each of Esme’s sessions will leave you feeling stronger, happier and more relaxed.
Myo is the Greek prefix for the word ‘muscle’. Fascia is the dense connective tissue that surrounds and covers them, holding your body together. When it becomes sensitive or tight, Myofascial release is the answer. Myofascial release is a specialised physical therapy that focuses on releasing muscular shortness and tightness to enhance mobility and release pain and tension.
Focusing on trigger points, Esme’s Myofascial Release classes will offer a mindful method of full-body self-massage. You’ll learn simple yet effective techniques, deepen your awareness of what your body needs and release stress through guided massage and restorative yoga.
“I attended Esme’s Roll to Release class. Using Therapy Balls to release tension in our body. A really fine balance of Esme holding space for us while we released the tight spots in our bodies also while managing to have a great laugh with everyone (didn’t know anyone when I arrived and left making friends); because we were all so tight, tense. Esme has a beautiful tribe, her knowledge of working the balls with the body and her light heartedness, and her timing was perfect. Myown body arrived tense, more tense than expected and left completely with out any ache or pain. I felt free in my body for the first time in a long time. For me this is a massive game-changer and I will be rolling every day! I’m so grateful to Esme for holding these classes and her generosity to pass on her knowledge that empowers all of us to self-heal. Definitely go and I’ll definitely be back!” Kat Shaw
Reiki is a Japanese technique. Made up of two words: Rei for higher power and ki for life force energy. The world in which we live is comprised of energies. When the energy flows uninterrupted, there is balance and harmony. It’s when your life force energy is low that you feel stressed or sick.
Reiki is a ‘laying on hands’ technique that reduces stress and enhances relaxation to promote Self healing. It’s considered so therapeutic that it’s often used as a complementary therapy for many illnesses including cancer and multiple sclerosis.
Esme’s Reiki sessions are brought directly to your home. She aims to balance your whole Being through the body’s energy centres ( chakras) and the energy fields (aura) around you to bring you comfort, balance and a more positive outlook.
As a Reiki Master, Esme also teaches all levels of Reiki. Click here for more information.
